Breakfast Ideas that Aren’t Cereal

You know what they say – breakfast is the most important meal of the day.  But are you getting bored of the same old thing for breakfast?  Are your kids bored of cereal again and again?  Sounds like you need some fresh ideas for the first meal of the day.

breakfast ideas that aren't cereal

I’m going to be straight up honest with you here – we eat A LOT of cereal in this house.  The reason being, that this girl right here is not even close to a morning person.  No matter how hard I try, no matter what new habits I try to implement, i’m just not that functional first thing in the morning.

If my kids don’t want me pouring coffee on their cereal, they are better off to get it themselves.  Now, my kids are old enough to grab themselves their breakfast so it works out well.  It wasn’t always that way of course and that’s when the cereal habit really kicked in.  It was very easy for me to pour bowls of cereal for them when they were very young.  And yes, I joke about it, but I promise I never actually poured coffee on their cereal.

I’m one of those “slow to wake up completely” kinds of persons.  So I may physically be awake, but I’m really walking in a zombie-like state.

*Side note – you know what’s really, really sad about all of this?  I had to give up caffeine in the mornings because my body couldn’t handle it.  So I drink decaf.  Decaf is a sad, sad joke.  It doesn’t wake you up.  It just gives you the illusion that it might wake you up but it’s really a big, fat placebo.

But, I’ll take what I can get.  so decaf it is.

Anyways, every once in awhile we all get a little sick of cereal in this house. That’s when I pull out my other ideas of what to make for breakfast.  Today I’m going to share with you some ideas, and then I’m going to link some recipes at the bottom of the page to get you started.

BREAKFAST IDEAS THAT AREN’T CEREAL

Put those breakfast bowls away and consider making some of these things:

Breakfast casseroles

Okay, breakfast casseroles are lifesavers for people like me who are in a daze first thing in the morning.  That’s because you can make them the night before and just pop them in the oven first thing in the morning.

For some casseroles you can even make them the night before and just pull them out of the fridge when you wake up.  That’s my kind of easy breakfast that isn’t cereal.

Toast

Ah, bread.  The most versatile food in the world, at least in my opinion.  Toast it, grill it, bake it, cover it with whatever you want and it’s a completely different meal.

For breakfast just slather some peanut butter, jam, honey, Nutella (oh yeah!), avocado, or whatever else you can think of and you’ve got a breakfast fit for a king.  or queen. 🙂  Pair it with some yogurt or fruit and it’s a complete meal!

Bacon and Eggs

Nothing like some bacon and eggs for breakfast, am I right?  Eggs are insanely cheap and bacon is insanely delicious!  You can make eggs a variety of ways.  Whip up an omelet or make them scrambled.  Whatever way you eat them they are a nice change from cereal.

Oatmeal.

Oats are super cheap and hearty.  I used to think oatmeal was boring until I realized how versatile they really are.  You can add all kinds of different toppings to make your boring old oatmeal into something amazing.  We like raisins and brown sugar, but chocolate chips once in a while are nice too.

Cinnamon buns.

Okay, you don’t want to eat cinnamon buns for breakfast every day because it’s just not good for you (correction:  you WANT to eat them every day, but you probably shouldn’t.)  However, once in  awhile it’s a pretty delicious treat.  Check out this recipe that is our favorite!

Pancakes or french toast

If you make either one of these your kids will love you for the rest of the day.  Something about that syrupy goodness that makes the whole family happy.

Breakfast Burritos

Fill a wrap with scrambled eggs, salsa, onions, and either some bacon or ground sausage and you will love this combination!  Breakfast burritos are a nice savory change from all the sweet breakfast ideas that people usually eat.

Muffins

Make a huge batch of your favorite muffins and serve them with some fruit or yogurt on the side and maybe a glass of orange juice.

To save time pre-make some of the breakfast foods earlier in the week.  You can make things like amish oatmeal or breakfast custard or some casseroles a couple days before you consume it.  That helps because you can make a few breakfasts at once and just warm it up in the morning or pop it in the oven to cook it.

Now, I really need to end this blog post because I am getting way too hungry for breakfast foods!  So, be sure to try some of these breakfast ideas on this list for a change of pace when you just can’t eat another bowl of cereal.
