I don’t know about you, but every year I’m amazed at how quickly Christmas arrives. I mean, of course it doesn’t come any quicker than the last year, but it feels like one minute I’m outside enjoying the Summer heat, and the next I’m making Christmas plans.
If you’ve read any of my previous Christmas posts, it’s no secret that one of my main goals for the holiday season is to stay out of debt. We like a simple Christmas over here. We want it to be slow and relaxing.
Okay, to be fair, Christmas with kids is anything but slow and relaxing, but you can take steps to make it a little slower and simpler than years past, if that’s something that is a goal of yours.
When it comes to shopping for gifts for our kids, we try to not overdo it. We hold firm to the mantra, “something you want, something you need, something to wear, and something to read.”
But, we also do stockings too. Because Christmas and stockings just seem right.
However, just like anything, stockings can add up in a hurry if we are not careful. Sure, they may LOOK like they fit only small items, but have you looked at the price of some of the smaller items out there? It also seems the older the person you are buying for, the smaller the gifts but somehow it’s more expensive.
At our house the adult stockings aren’t very full because we tend to spend a little more money on the individual items in the stocking. However, to keep it within budget we just buy less! Last year my husband and I didn’t do Christmas gifts as the budget didn’t allow, but we still did stockings for one another.
When it comes to buying gifts for your spouse, I know that can be a hot topic too. I know couples who do and couples who don’t. While last year we didn’t, we usually try to buy SOMETHING for eachother at Christmas. It isn’t about the stuff – both my husband and I are not people who desire a lot of things.
The reason we’ve chosen to continue to buy eachother Christmas gifts is because once you have kids it’s so easy to put your marriage on the backburner. Christmas is just ONE way we can be intentional about going out and doing something that requires us to think about the other person.
Buying a gift or stocking stuffers for your loved one takes time and effort, and my husband and I know that our kids, the blessings that they are, do take up so much of that time and effort.
Therefore, we like to use Christmas as one way to tell the other person, “I am thinking about you.” It’s a small way we can be intentional about our marriage. However, if you and your spouse don’t do gifts or stockings that doesn’t mean there aren’t a hundred other ways you can be intentional about showing them you care. This is just what works for us.
All that to say, don’t let stockings be the thing that breaks your Christmas budget. Also, if you are looking for stocking stuffer ideas for under 5 dollars, many of the things on this list fall under that price range. Today I am going to share with you a list of stocking stuffer ideas for everyone on your Christmas list!
